Part of the reasoning behind me liking more than less in terms of fighting is that you never know what you are going to get. MMA is literally a mix. But that also means that I have to agree with Dana White. You can’t just grade a card on paper. So you can see I am in a pickle here.
Before we get into the mixing of the arts hopefully you guys got to see the concert that was Tyson Fury’s entrance into his bout with Dillian Whyte, in which he ended with a picture perfect uppercut that sent Whyte to the mat.
Bout was ended and so was the boxing career of Tyson Fury, not without hinting at the next move, which was inviting Francis Ngannou to the boxing ring. With him saying that he wants to know who the baddest motherfucker is, which means it will be inside of a cage to some extent or some mix of rules. Either way its one step closer for Francis to get paid what he is worth so can’t wait.
We then have to talk about the controversial stoppage of Mike Beltran in the bout between Liz Carmouche and Juliana Velazquez in which Velazquez was caught in a Crucifix and absorbed 5 shots before the referee stopped the fight. Carmouche sided with Beltran while Velazquez was livid saying that they immediately need to run it back and that the result should be overturned. As for me I have no informed opinion on this since I didn’t see the fight, however being stuck in a crucifix in not a good place to be in, you know what I am saying?
There was also bantamweight Grand Prix action where Danny Sabatello had a great showing and for my money is doing the whole self promotion thing right. At least in my opinion. You can promote yourself and your skills while trying to sell the fight without a gimmick. He talks mad shit, has confidence in front of a mic and delivered on his performance. He is a bit of a decision machine but he is still very early on in his MMA career but things are looking bright, especially considering that he is one step closer in the Grand Prix which one Kyoji Horiguchi is not.
Patchy Mix put on a smart performance against a very active Horiguchi. In the first round got right to it and ended up getting a back pack on Horiguchi essentially taking the first round. and after that he cut the angles appropriately to limit the footwork of Kyoji perfectly. Textbook. Patchy Mix moves forward. We then have Stots finishing Juan Archuleta for the first time and winning the Interim belt. I end up having to deal with the fact that my brother was right about one thing concerning MMA. Also don’t forget your boy Yan is still number two, bitch.
Moving on Cyborg goes to war with Arlene Blencowe but still wins, she says that she wants to go into the world of boxing and what can I say, I am all for it. Cris Cyborg deserves everything that she can get and it could not happen to a better pioneer for the sport of MMA.
Then we have the UFC in where the fights started off with Dean Berry completely defiling Mike Jackson eye socket by almost fish hooking it. Imagine a face mask penalty but with a skull. Straight vile. But also this was after Berry did a spinning back kick right to the crotch of Mike Jackson. Nobody can tell me that he did not earn that victory, Mike Jackson is now 1-1 in the UFC, having a win over CM punk being overturned due to marijuana (lol) and a loss to Mickey Gall.
Four subs for the night all in the first round doesn’t seem bad at all to me, but we can also add the cherry on top when two of those finishes where historic. The first one being the third Knee bar finish in the octagon with Claudio Puelles. He is the first to reach the mark, sinking the quick submission over Clay Guida masterfully. Hopefully Clay’s knee didn’t sustain too much damage.
And for the other half of the history Jessica Andrade gets the first Standing Arm Triangle finish in UFC history when Amanda Lemos misses on a strike and Jessica ends up in perfect position for the submission. Andrade from what I saw was losing the bout with Lemos keeping her distance up until the miss.
So yeah, the fights were dope, Kevin and Dana were right. The nets suck.
